Exercise Induced Migraine Attack
Exercise Induced Migraine Attack

Do you suffer with Exercise Induced Migraine Attacks?

Mistake #1 Over doing it Either going too hard or long with aerobic exercise (? increased blood pressure) or lifting weight that is too heavy, particularly upper body exercises including pushups. If you are too weak your neck muscles will turn on when they shouldn’t which will in turn increase the sensitisation of your brainstem

Mistake #2 Impact Jogging may put too much stress through your neck if you have a low threshold to migraine and your nervous system is sensitive - once this is corrected jogging is encouraged but not in the early stages. Having good footwear that absorbs impact and avoid running on concrete can also help reduce impact.

Mistake #3 Environment You will need to consider the environment you exercise in as certain conditions can be very triggering: 1.exercising in hot, humid conditions should be avoided 2.exercising in noisy environments should be avoided 3.exercising where there are bright and / or flashing lights (e.g. - some spin classes) should be avoided

Mistake #4 Poor neck posture Exercising in a bad posture such as poking your chin forward, commonly seen when cycling or lifting heavy weight can put excessive strain on the small joints of your neck resulting in nerve sensitivity - this then lowers your migraine threshold and can trigger an attack.

Mistake #5 Avoidance Avoiding exercise altogether is just as detrimental as all the previous 4 mistakes. Our bodies need exercise to stay strong, boost our circulation, settle our nervous system and boost biochemical reactions in the body (including those that balance our hormones)

Learn the correct way to exercise and say goodbye to MIGRAINE!
